Always Up-to-Date: Can I Fly with CBD?
Travel – it’s a pastime everyone enjoys. From weekend beach trips to adventures in the city, there’s something appealing about exploring new locations with friends, family, or solo.
But does travel have to mean a disruption in your wellness habits? For years, rumors have swirled around the legality of traveling with CBD – especially when flying.
So, can you take CBD along with you on your next domestic flight? Let’s find out.
What Does the TSA Say?
Before May 2019, the TSA ruled that traveling with any cannabis or hemp product was not allowed, and that officers were instructed to hand over these cases to law enforcement. However, at the beginning of summer 2019, the TSA’s stance changed.
The official website now says that CBD products are allowed in both carry on and checked bags, but that there are special instructions that must be followed. Unfortunately, these instructions are not written out specifically, and are often judged on a case-by-case basis, with the final approval being made by individual TSA officers.
But there is hope. On the official TSA Twitter account, the organization said that “Products that contain hemp-derived CBD oil or are FDA-approved are generally legal & can fly” – meaning that most products are probably safe.
It’s important to note that there are some exceptions to flying with cannabis products.
Any THC or CBD item that contains more than 0.3% THC is not allowed. These products are not protected under the 2018 Farm Bill, and are therefore ineligible to take along on a flight (as they are still illegal in many states).
Also, remember that TSA maintains strict rules about liquids while flying. Only liquids in 3.4 oz containers or smaller are allowed on flights – and this includes CBD products that are liquid, such as oils. You can avoid this by choosing to a solid CBD product, like Montel by Select’s bioavailable CBD gel capsules.
Although this new protection is still in its early stages, it does mark a significant stride in the ease of traveling with cannabis. While taking CBD along on a flight used to mean checking each state’s individual regulations before visiting, users can now travel across the country with CBD in accordance with Federal laws.
This is just one more positive step toward CBD – and cannabis – finding national acceptance, allowing more people in need to benefit from its incredible wellness properties.
